The New York Sour is a great summer drink. This cocktail combines whiskey, tart citrus, simple syrup, and a layer of red wine on top. I make a batch of sour mix which keeps in the fridge and cuts down on the steps for the recipe, and is also perfect for so many other cocktails and mocktails. Snag my recipe for homemade sour mix here.
The key to getting the red wine layer is pouring very gently over the back of a spoon. This allows the wine to stay on top of the cocktail rather than sinking down into it, creating two distinct and beautiful layers. This is a trial and error thing to keep practicing – you can see in my images here that the drink in the background has a heavier red wine layer that sinks lower. No big deal!
To batch this recipe for easy entertaining, mix the whiskey and sour mix ahead of time and keep in the fridge. Pour into your rocks glasses over ice and then add the wine to serve.Print
